Ocean Star Off Shore Drilling Rig and Museum

4576999757_e78c33d977_zIf you know only one thing about the state of Texas, it’s probably that we Texans made our fortunes off some black goop that comes out of the ground. Black gold, Texas tea, bubbling crude, whatever you choose to call the oil that is so much a part of us, it’s what put Texas on the map. Over the decades, many men have sacrificed so much—including their lives—to continue the tradition. Working on an offshore drilling rig can be extremely dangerous, as shown in the exhibits available at the Ocean Star Off Shore Drilling Rig and Museum located right here in Galveston.

Entertaining & Educational

The best part of museums is the way they manage to make learning fun, and Ocean Star is no exception. The museum, located on a real oil drilling rig, features actual equipment used to drill for oil, such as drill bits, remote controlled vehicles, and other equipment and electronics that were exclusively used in the day to day running of an offshore oil drilling rig. Videos and other displays tell the stories of the men who worked here day in and day out, often spending months at a time away from their families and everyone who was special to them, just to keep the bills from mounting. The pay of an offshore worker is commensurate with the dangers they faced every day. An outreach program offered by the museum is geared towards teaching today’s youth the importance of offshore energy and instills a renewed interest in expanding the technology that is available today.

The Offshore Energy Center’s Hall of Fame

Also included on the drilling rig is a Hall of Fame that honors the innovative leaders in the industry, including the men who created the structure that enables us to drill off shore. Firemen, construction workers, engineers, and rig designers are all immortalized in the hall, each being honored for their specific contributions to furthering energy research and development. Special awards, including the Pinnacle Award, the Founding Pioneer Award, and the Industry Champion Award are given away each year to honor those who have improved environmental risks, safety concerns, and other issues that accompany the drilling of oil from offshore rigs.
