Galveston for the Holidays

If you have taken a look at your calendar recently, you may have noticed that the month at the top states it is November, which means Christmas is NEXT MONTH! Before you start panicking, however, and counting the shopping days till that hallowed day, why not sit back, relax, and start planning a Christmas holiday of the Western sort?

Galveston, Texas has December temperatures that resemble the ones in your home state, without that bone chilling cold, and because we do EVERYTHING bigger in Texas, you’re guaranteed a celebration like no other. Here’s a list of some of the holiday celebrations you can expect when you spend Christmas in Galveston.

Festival of Lights

Nothing says Christmas more than a million twinkle lights in all colors lighting up the night as you skate around Galveston’s only outdoor ice skating rink enjoying the show. Fly down the Artic Slide, board the Christmas train, and have your picture taken with Santa. The Festival of Lights starts November 12 and lasts until January 8th!

Elf at the Grand 1894 Opera House

The holiday shows out on in this historic building will bring out your inner child, and Elf is just one of the many Christmas musicals you can see here. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, A Christmas Carol, and Elvis Christmas Memories starring Jeff Rowley are just an example of how the Grand celebrates the holidays.

Dickens on the Strand

The biggest and most fantastic of all Christmas celebrations, however, take place on the Strand every year around this time. Held December 2-4, 19th Century London is reborn on the streets of the Strand Historic District with Victorian Era garbed ladies and gentlemen singing old time Christmas Carols, parades of kilt wearing bagpipers, and all manner of English treats and treasures. The party never ends, and if you dress in Victorian character, your ticket is automatically half off!

Santa at the Galveston Railroad Museum

Mark December 10th down on your holiday calendar: This is the day Santa arrives via the Harborside Express Train at the Galveston Railroad Museum (his reindeer will be carbing it up at the North Pole in preparation for “the night”!). This is a unique opportunity for your kids to meet and greet the jolly old elf while learning all there is to know about historic trains.
