Galveston, Texas is an island in the Gulf of Mexico just to south of the city of Houston. It is famous as a spring break destination, but there really is not a bad time of year to visit Galveston, as the weather is always beautiful and the water is cool. This is especially true because the island’s event calendar is full of great events, especially their festival events. Here are some of the most exciting festivals in Galveston that you should not miss.

Mardi Gras! Galveston

You are probably familiar with the phrase, “everything is bigger in Texas.” Well, there is no Mardi Gras festival in the entire state that is bigger than the one in Galveston. This is not your ordinary Mardi Gras celebration. Visitors can enjoy the spectacle of endless balcony parties, over 22 parades, and over three million beads. Between all of the festivities, you can enjoy live music from excellent bands focusing on the music of New Orleans. This amazing event definitely gives Louisiana a run for their money.

Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival

This area is famous for the amazing food that they have. This festival is a celebration like no other focusing on the delicious cuisine of the Gulf, with a special emphasis on shrimp! You can taste a wide variety of classic southern shrimp recipes, as you casually make your way down, “Gumbo Stroll,” where over 80 teams of chefs whip up classic and unique dishes. There is even a massive parade featuring our favorite sea creatures. If you are a lover of seafood, and shrimp in particular, then you will find yourself in paradise at the Galveston Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival in September!

The Island Oktoberfest

There is perhaps no better place to enjoy this iconic event than in Galveston, Texas. The island has very strong German roots, so they take special pride in this weekend of festivities. On October 27th and 28th, the First Lutheran Church of Galveston is transformed into bustling festival ground. The live entertainment goes a long way in helping the delicious German beer go down smoother than ever. Bratwursts and strudel are only a couple of the delicious foods that will be whipped up throughout the weekend. Arts, crafts, children’s games, and much more make the event perfect for everyone. The best part is that this festival is completely FREE to attend!
