Originally designed as recreational facility for military personnel during World War II, Pleasure Pier has experienced many highs and lows over the years, including devastating hurricanes and tropical storms that tried to break the pier. In 1965, Hurricane Carla did inflict damage on this boardwalk amusement park, but was unable to knock it into submission. In 2008, Hurricane Ike succeeded where Carla had failed, and the Galveston, TX pier was put out of business.
Texans are a stubborn bunch, however, and in 2012, the Pleasure pier reopened, proving once more you can’t keep a good Texan down for long! Today, the nostalgic rides, shops, and restaurants make this pier in Galveston THE place to visit, and many events and festivals take place at the pier throughout the year, including the summer kickoff festival, the Beach Revue.
The Rides this Galveston, TX Pier Is Known For
Kids of all ages enjoy a day spent riding the rides of this Galveston, TX pier. The two story carousel is enjoyed by the young and the young at heart, the Texas tea cups have caused many a queasy stomach, and the 1264-foot Iron Shark Rollercoaster—with its 100-foot-high drop—is attempted by only the bravest of soles over 48 inches tall. The Pier Pile-up, our version of bumper cars, has an adult section and a child section, ensuring the younger ones will have fun without their safety being put at risk. And finally, the Pirates Plunge is a water coaster featuring two 40 foot vertical drops that are a heck of a lot more fun than walking the plank, or at least we think so; we’ve never had to walk a plank before!
Shops and Dining
The Pleasure pier in Galveston also offers cute little shops that feature an array of wares consisting of everything from candy to souvenirs, and dining establishments that offer more than just your standard carnival food. The most difficult decision you’re going to have to make after a day on the Pier is deciding between the Saltgrass Steakhouse and Fisherman’s Wharf for dinner choices. We hate to make the choice, so we just come back the next day and eat where we didn’t the first time; we suggest you try that method as well!
