The impressive and ornate facade of Bishop's Palace in Galveston, Texas.

Bishop’s Palace: A Historic Galveston, TX Monument

Taking over five years to build starting in 1887, this 19,000+ square foot castle located in the heart of historic Galveston, TX needed to be large, as Colonel Gresham and his wife had created nine legacies—we mean children—over the course of their lives together! Designed by Galveston’s top architect, Nicholas Clayton, this home has been designated one of America’s top 100 most important homes, and today, tourists the world over flock to our city for a chance to tour this historic Galveston monument.

Unique and Breathtaking

Built of multicolored stone and steel, the word monument is the only one worthy of describing this massive construction situated on a lot that is surprisingly small. Turrets and Tudor style arches give the palace a romantic and yet still imposing exterior, with an interior that, while it is currently undergoing renovations, matches the exterior in grandness. Rich warm wood can be found throughout: beneath your feet as flooring, above your head in the crown molding, and intricately carved under your hands in the magnificent railings that frame the palatial staircase (which is truly the star of the home).

Arches and turrets are found throughout the interior of Bishop’s palace, which was sold to the Catholic Archdiocese and housed the Bishop for a period of time, hence the name the Bishop’s Palace. Wallpapers in rich colors and paintings framed in gold dot the walls, much as they would have when this castle was built. Exploring this noble abode will both take your breath away, and lend some key insight into Galveston’s history.
