American Undersea Warfare Center

Planning a trip to Galveston Island, TX can be overwhelming with all that there is to see and do in the coastal town. However, if you want a truly unique and memorable experience, you don’t want to miss out on adding the American Undersea Warfare Center to your itinerary. Whether you have a love for boats, war history, or both, you will find this attraction to be interesting and enjoyable for everyone in your group.

Visiting the American Undersea Warfare Center

A visit to the American Undersea Warfare Center will allow you to get up close and personal with a self-guided tour on two authentic World War II watercrafts. Wind in and out of tiny rooms and narrow corridors while imagining the servicemen that used to live there for weeks at a time. It’s open daily from 9AM-5PM with a minimal entrance fee.

The Undersea Warfare Center is located at Seawolf Park on Pelican Island, where there is also an impressive view of the Galveston harbor, children’s playground, fishing pier, and picnic sites available for a full day of fun and adventure. The memorial park is used to commemorate veterans and the submarines that played such a significant part in WWII.

History of the USS Cavalla & USS Stewart

The USS Cavalla was built and launched in 1943. The Gato class fleet submarine, nicknamed Lucky Lady, was honored with the Presidential Unit Citation after sinking a Japanese aircraft carrier that was used in Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Coral Sea. She is now permanently berthed at Seawolf Park where she is proudly on display for the public to enjoy.

The USS Stewart was initially utilized as a training ship for students in Miami, FL. Built and launched in 1942, the Destroyer Escort is only one of three left in the world. She held the important job of escorting President Roosevelt down the Potomac River where he was set to meet with USS Iowa about his mission to Casablanca and Tehran. During her time of service, she also launched North Atlantic convoy operations, navigating waters amidst enemy submarines and aircraft. She has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
